In case you had not noticed 2FA via text to your smartphone has become a
security standard, "forcing" you to reveal your cell number to quite a
   few vendors.

   In my case,

   Banks
   Brokerage firms
   Microsoft
   Apple
   Civil Air Patrol eServices
   My insurance providers
   IRS
   Indiana Dept. of Revenue
   Social Security Admin.
   Medicare
   Google
   Credit Bureaus

Did all these actors "murder" privacy?
