The first very commandment is: 'You shall have no other gods before Me.'

other gods or idols—was considered idolatry,

prescribed penalties could include death
(see Exodus 22:20, Deuteronomy 13:6–10),
particularly if someone actively led others
to worship false gods or participated in
idol worship.
It wasn’t just about punishment, though—
the commandment was seen as vital to the
covenant between God and Israel. Idolatry
was viewed as spiritual treason, because
it violated the exclusive relationship
the people of Israel were to have with God.
