   December 31 is the feast day of Saint Sylvester I, Pope.   
   He was Pope from 314 to 335, during the reign of   
   Emperor Constantine. Sylvester I is traditionally   
   associated with the era when Christianity became   
   legally recognized in the Roman Empire, though many   
   famous stories about him (such as personally baptizing   
   Constantine) are later legends rather than solid history.   
   He is also why New Year’s Eve is called “Silvester” in   
   several European countries (like Germany and Austria).
