   It is sometimes claimed that around 9 million   
   witches were killed over the ages, mainly in   
   Europe. According to this claim, the killings   
   were carried out by Christian societies through   
   church-influenced secular courts, using methods   
   such as burning at the stake, hanging, beheading,   
   strangulation, and deaths under torture or   
   imprisonment. The victims are usually described   
   as predominantly women and social outsiders.
