If you could dig a straight tunnel from Vancouver
to Jerusalem through the Earth, it would be roughly
9,500 km—shorter than the surface flight distance
of about 11,500 km—cutting directly through the
planet along a chord. Of course, such a tunnel
would be impossibly dangerous, exposing you to
extreme heat, crushing pressure, molten rock, and
the impossibility of breathable air long before
   you got anywhere near Jerusalem.
