Civil liberties have been eroded at different times for
different groups, often during fear, war, or moral panic.
For example, during World War II about 120,000 Japanese
Americans, most of them U.S. citizens, were forcibly
interned without due process. This is now officially
recognized as unjust and driven by racism and fear.

African Americans lived under Jim Crow laws for decades,
facing segregation, voter suppression, and unequal legal
treatment despite constitutional rights. Labor organizers
in the late 1800s and early 1900s were arrested, surveilled,
or violently suppressed for striking or union activity.

During the Red Scares and McCarthy era, political dissenters
lost jobs and freedoms based on beliefs or associations.
After 9/11, many Muslim and Arab Americans faced expanded
surveillance, detention, and profiling. Indigenous peoples
also endured forced relocation and long-term denial of
   legal and cultural rights.

These examples show that even strong democracies can fail
under pressure, and liberties are often restored only in
   hindsight.
