You know some people view the "Star of David" as a Jewish Symbol
and some people consider it a magical amulet or sorts.

and then, i am reminded what Paul said about "meat offered to idols"
that an 'idol' is nothing, and that he could eat such meat and not be
   defiled.
Paul just said that he would defer to the so-called "weaker brothers"
whose consciousness may be defiled by eating such meat.

whether images of a t shaped cross are in themselves, a form of heathen
   idolatry ,
would seem to be in the eye of the beholder, as you seem to agree.

so, i wouldn't exclaim that the Flag of Israel
is a heathen symbol and should be torn down
because some people may see it as an emblem of David The King
and some others may see it as a magical amulet,

   it seems very superficial,

   sort of like saying;

"don't look at the moon, some people adore it as an idol."

""yeah, well, _I_ don't, it's just a ball of dust""

what if some Satanist group started calling themselves

"Jehovah's Witnesses" and began going door to door

evangelizing people about their Dark Lord Satan as 'Creator of Unholy
   Saturday'

should, then, "Real" /Jehovah's Witnesses/ stop being who they are?

   just asking, not accusing.
