In this post we look at the context of use for the greek word used for the
roman cross; those who killed Christ after all, no? Coming soon a test in
history for the shape of the cross used by the apostolic fathers and their
   disciples.

The jw vatican says it wass a "torture stake",ie. asingle upright wooden
   item.

The greek word used in the NT has the basic meaning of "pole". The same
wourd is used for the mast of a ship. That also applied to the
crosspieces,ie. woodn yards to which the sails attach.

Also applies to a fencepost, across which was attached wooden pieces to
prevent movement through the fence. Other vertical wooden items used the
same word to stand for the entire wooden structure.

The NT word does not describe an entire wooden item; as above; but the
jewish writers using greek could also use "pole" to mean the entire
   wooden structure..".

   Thus the jw
vatican "torture stake" is wrong, the intention of the cross; by any greek
name was excution/death; not torture alone. People were tortued by
flogging which ripped away skin and other flesh before being attached to
the roman cross structure. The wooden item Christ carried across both
flogged sholders was the cross piece of the roman item.
