   Gehenom/Hell

According to Judaism, what is Gehenom/Hell? According to a lot of
Christians, Hell is a horribly hot place and ungodly people will go there and
suffer for all Eternity. But Judaism does not teach this. So what is
Gehenom, and what is its purpose?

It appears that the Christian descriptions of Hell in the New Testament sound
like the descriptions of Hades from Greek Mythology. That would reinforce my
theory that a lot of the New Testament theology was developed from combining
   Judaism and pagan
religions, namely Greek Mythology, which was big at the time the New Testament
   books were written.

   Thanks for your help.
