BRUCE McARTHUR: Cops thought three victims had fallen prey to
   cannibal

Before cops honed in on suspected serial killer Bruce McArthur
in the Gay Village disappearances another man was in their sites.

Last winter, a near daily carnival of horror unfolded in
sickening detail that included dismemberment, trophy photos and
   body parts buried in planters.

According to a report from W5, detectives at first suspected
three of the missing men — Skanda Navaratnam, Basir Faizi, and
Majeed Kayhan — had fallen victim to a cannibal.

On the cannibal fantasy forum, Zambian Meat, a Peterborough man
boasted he had murdered and eaten a man in Toronto in 2012.

And, as The Toronto Sun first reported last March, that was the
path the Project Houston detectives went down for seven months.

Cops called the main suspect in the macabre scenario “Suspect
   Zero,” the investigative show reports.

As first reported by The Sun last March, his name is James Alex
   Brunton.

Now retired, the 70-year-old Peterborough man and former minor
hockey volunteer had been charged with a slew of sex-related
   charges.

Brunton was living in a secret online world of cannibal
fetishists and he used the handle Chefmate50.

For at least seven months, detectives conducted around the clock
   surveillance on the hospital technician.

Cops would eventually determine that Brunton’s wild claims were
fantasy and that he was uninvolved in the disappearances.
