|    October 5th - St. Galla (1/2)    |

From: richarra@gmail.com              October 5th - St. Galla              St. Galla was one of three daughters of the nobleman Quintus Aurelius       Symmachus       who in 485 was consul in Italy. St. Gregory the Great speaks about her life       in       the "Dialogues".              Galla was married while very young, but within a year became a very wealthy       widow. She then decided to consecrate her life to Christ. Despite pressure       from       her family and even being threatened by the medical profession with a       prevailing       superstition of the time, she held firm in her resolve.              St. Galla joined a group of women who had also consecrated themselves to       Christ       and lived near the basilica of St. Peter in Rome. She devoted herself to       prayer       and service to the poor, caring for the sick and providing for the needy.              In later life Galla developed cancer and tradition tells us that she had a       vision of St. Peter calling her to follow him. She requested that her dear       friend also come, but St. Peter said that only she and another were called       at       this time, but her friend would follow in thirty days. She and another woman       died three days later, and indeed thirty days later her dear friend       Benedicta       also died.              St. Galla encourages us once again to think about basic values. As a very       wealthy young woman and daughter of a famous and powerful statesman, she       could       have had anything she wanted and could have spent her time enjoying whatever       pleasures she desired. Instead she gave her wealth to help those in need and       dedicated her life to love of God and neighbor. She, like St. Francis of       Assisi,       heard and followed God's call to simplicity and holiness with a radical       commitment that can still inspire young and old.                     Quote:       We declare that the greater part of those who are damned have brought the       calamity on themselves by ignorance of the mysteries of the Faith, which       they       should have known and believed, in order to be united with the elect.        -Pope Benedict XIV (1740-1758)              Bible Quote       25. But Jesus called them to him, and said: You know that the princes of the       Gentiles lord it over them; and they that are the greater, exercise power       upon       them. 26. It shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be the greater       among       you, let him be your minister: 27. And he that will be first among you,       shall be       your servant. 28. Even as the Son of man is not come to be ministered unto,       but       to minister, and to give his life a redemption for many. (Matthew 20:25-28)                     <><><><>       +Novena to the Holy Ghost+              First Day: The Holy Ghost              Holy Spirit! Lord of light!       From Thy clear celestial height,       Thy pure beaming radiance give!              Only one thing is important-eternal salvation. Only one thing, therefore,       is to be feared-sin. Sin is the result of ignorance, weakness, and       indifference. The Holy Ghost is the Spirit of Light, of Strength, and of       Love.       With       His sevenfold gifts, He enlightens the mind, strengthens the will, and       inflames       the heart with love of God. To ensure our salvation, we ought to invoke the       Divine Spirit daily, for "The Spirit helpeth our infirmity. We know not what       we       should pray for as we ought. But the Spirit Himself asketh for us.              Almighty and eternal God, Who hast vouchsafed to regenerate us by water and       the Holy Ghost, and hast given us forgiveness of all our sins, vouchsafe to       send forth from heaven upon us Thy sevenfold Spirit, the Spirit of Wisdom       and       Understanding, the Spirit of Counsel and Fortitude, the Spirit of Knowledge       and       Piety, and fill us with the Spirit of Holy Fear. Amen.              Our Father, Hail Mary, 7 Glory Bes       Act of Consecration to the Holy Ghost       Prayer for the Seven Gifts of the Holy Ghost                     Act of Consecration to the Holy Ghost               On my knees before the great multitude of heavenly witnesses, I offer       myself, soul and body to You, Eternal Spirit of God. I adore the brightness       of       Your purity, the unerring keenness of Your justice, and the might of Your       love.       You are the Strength and Light of my soul. In You I live and move and am. I       desire never to grieve You by unfaithfulness to grace and I pray with all my       heart to be kept from the smallest sin against You. Mercifully guard my       every       thought and grant that I may always watch for Your light and listen to Your       voice and follow Your gracious inspirations. I cling to You and give myself       to       You and ask You, by Your compassion, to watch over me in my weakness.       Holding       the pierced Feet of Jesus and looking at His Five Wounds and trusting in His       Precious Blood and adoring His opened Side and stricken Heart, I implore       You,       Adorable Spirit, Helper of my infirmity, so to keep me in Your grace that I       may       never sin against You. Give me grace, O Holy Ghost, Spirit of the Father and       the       Son, to say to You always and everywhere, "Speak, Lord, for Your servant       heareth." Amen.                     Prayer for the Seven Gifts of the Holy Ghost              O Lord Jesus Christ, Who, before ascending into heaven, didst promise to       send       the Holy Ghost to finish Thy work in the souls of Thy Apostles and       Disciples,       deign to grant the same Holy Spirit to me, that He may perfect in my soul       the       work of Thy grace and Thy love. Grant me the Spirit of Wisdom that I may       despise the perishable things of this world and aspire only after the things       that       are eternal, the Spirit of Understanding to enlighten my mind with the light       of Thy divine truth, the Spirit of Counsel that I may ever choose the surest       way of pleasing God and gaining Heaven, the Spirit of Fortitude that I may       bear       my cross with Thee, and that I may overcome with courage all the obstacles       that oppose my salvation, the Spirit of Knowledge that I may know God and       know       myself and grow perfect in the science of the Saints, the Spirit of Piety       that I       may find the service of God sweet and amiable, the Spirit of Fear that I may       be filled with a loving reverence towards God, and may dread in any way to       displease Him. Mark me, dear Lord, with the sign of Thy true disciples and       animate me in all things with Thy Spirit. Amen.       Act of Consecration to the Holy Ghost              On my knees before the great multitude of heavenly witnesses, I offer myself       soul and body to Thee, Eternal Spirit of God. I adore the brightness of Thy       purity, the unerring keenness of Thy justice, and the might of Thy love.       Thou       art the Strength and Light of my soul. In Thee I live and move and am. I       desire       never to grieve Thee by unfaithfulness to grace, and I pray with all my       heart       to be kept from the smallest sin against Thee.
