|    November 6th - St. Demetrian of Khytri,     |

From: richarra@gmail.com              November 6th - St. Demetrian of Khytri, Bishop              Demetrian was born about the year 830 in the village of Sykai (Sika),       Cyprus.       His father was a priest in that village. Demetrian decided to marry at an       early       age, but his wife died after three months. He decided to embrace the       monastic       life and entered St. Anthony's monastery in Sykai at the age of sixteen.              Demetrian lived a very holy life and was ordained a priest by Eustathios,       Bishop       of Khytri(Kyrka). Eustathios desired to keep him at Khytri but Demetrian       convinced the bishop that it was better for him to return to his monastery.       Demetrian was elected abbot and he governed the monastery for forty years       and       was known for his compassion, love and prayerfulness.              Eustathios was transferred to the dioceses of Salamis and he appointed       Demetrian       bishop of Khytri. Legend tells us that Demetrian ran away to a friend and       hid in       a cave because he felt unworthy of such an appointment. The friend however       began       to feel he had done wrong and thus Demtrian's cave was discovered and he had       to       submit to consecration as Bishop of Khytri.              He served as bishop for about twenty five years with great prudence, wisdom,       compassion and love. Toward the end of his life Cyprus was invaded by the       Saracens and many of the Christians were taken captive. Demetrian followed       them       to Baghdad to ransom them from slavery and tradition tells us that the       raiders       were so impressed by this elderly man's simplicity and selflessness that the       prisoners were allowed to return to their homes.              Demetrian died about the year 911. While the only details of his life come       from       a 10th century Greek manuscript which does not give us a great deal of       biographical data, what it does tell us about is the tremendous selflessness       and       dedication to God of this saint. His was a life of humility, compassion and       love, three virtues which can be difficult at times to practice, but can       bring       us to such great peace and joy.                     Saint Quote:       If the Lord should give you power to raise the dead, He would give much less       than He does when he bestows suffering. By miracles you would make yourself       debtor to Him, while by suffering He may become debtor to you. And even if       sufferings had no other reward than being able to bear something for that       God       who loves you, is not this a great reward and a sufficient remuneration?       Whoever       loves, understands what I say.       -Saint John Chrysostom              Bible Quote:       Above all things have charity, which is the bond of perfection. (Col. 3:14)                     <><><><>       ABANDONMENT TO THE DIVINE WILL              Father, I abandon myself into Your hands; Do with me what       You will. Whatever You may do, I thank You: I am ready for       all, I accept all. Let only Your will be done in me, And in all       Your creatures- I wish no more than this, O Lord. Into Your       hands I commend my soul; I offer it to You with all the love of       my heart, For I love You, Lord, and so need to give myself to       surrender my self into Your hands without reserve, and with       boundless confidence, for You are my Father. Amen       (Brother Charles de Foucauld)                     <><><><>       Daily Thoughts and Prayers for Our Beloved Dead              "Have pity on me, have pity on me, at least you my friends, because the hand       of       the Lord hath touched me" Job. 19-21.              SIXTH DAY              The Souls in Purgatory are powerless to help themselves. They cannot do       penance,       nor offer satisfaction, nor gain indulgences, nor receive the Sacraments.       They       cannot pray for themselves. We, who are still on earth, can share with them       the       Graces which God so generously and abundantly gives us.              Prayer: Our Father, Three Hail Marys, Gloria, De Profundis.              De Profundis               Out of the depths, I have cried to Thee,       O Lord, Lord, hear my voice.        Let Thine ears be attentive to the       voice of my supplication.        If Thou, O Lord, shalt mark my iniquities,       O Lord, who shall stand it?        For with Thee there is merciful       forgiveness: and by reason of Thy       law I have waited for Thee, O Lord.       My soul hath relied on His word; my soul       hath hoped in the Lord.        From the morning watch even until       night; let Israel hope in the Lord.       Because with the Lord there is mercy;       And with Him plenteous redemption.        And He shall redeem Israel from       all its iniquities.        Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,       And let perpetual light shine upon them:        May they rest in peace. Amen.              Most beloved Jesus, by the merits of Thy five wounds, hear the pleas and       release       from the torments of Purgatory the faithful soul that did the most good on       earth. Place it today at Thy heavenly throne that it may join in honoring       Thee       and in guiding me to live according to its dictates.              Also See:       http://www.dailycatholic.org/deprofun.htm              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
