   California's fast-food industry shed nearly 20,000 jobs after the state's   
   $20 minimum wage mandate went into effect in April 2024, according to data   
   from late 2025. This job loss rate was significantly higher than in other   
   industries and outpaced national trends for the fast-food sector, with   
   some reports showing a total loss of around 19,100 to 19,500 jobs by the   
   first quarter of 2025. The wage hike's timing has been directly linked to   
   these job losses, as the industry faces increased labor costs.
