A judge has sentenced a San Antonio man to decades in prison after a
jury convicted him of beating his 12-year-old son and forcing him to
perform exercises until he collapsed and died.

Derrick Coles, 35, was sentenced to 45 years in prison Monday by state
district Judge Joel Perez. He faced up to 99 years in prison following
his conviction in August on four counts of injury to a child causing
serious bodily injury and a lesser charge for recklessly causing injury
   to a child.

   Coles' trial

"I want to sincerely thank everyone who made today's sentencing possible
and for their unwavering commitment in securing justice for Danilo,"
Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales said in a statement.
"Protecting children will always be of utmost importance to us, and we
will continue to fight on their behalf."

Officers went to the couple's Northwest Side home Feb. 6, 2022, after
receiving a report of an injured child. Paramedics at the scene found
Coles' son, Danilo, on the floor in cardiac arrest and began to perform
   chest compressions on him.

During Coles' trial in August, an emergency doctor testified that the
boy arrived unresponsive and was pronounced dead on the hospital bed.
Hospital staff found several injuries on Danilo - including bruises,
burns and cuts - all of which were shown to the jury.

The doctor said Coles told him that he made Danilo do five hours of
"military-style" push-ups right before he collapsed. His wife, Kapri
Cheatom, is charged in the boy's death, too. She is awaiting trial.

Coles and Cheatom told police that they had "disciplined" Danilo for
about four hours that day before they told him to take a shower. They
said they allowed Danilo to eat before resuming their discipline, making
him do push-ups until he physically couldn't and hitting him multiple
times with a belt, according to an arrest affidavit.

The Bexar County medical examiner determined that Danilo's cause of
death was rhabdomyolysis - a condition in which the muscle tissues break
down and releases harmful substances into the bloodstream, causing the
   organs to shut down.

The condition is rarely fatal, the emergency doctor said, only under
extreme conditions. He said he believed the exercise had gone on "the
   entire day."

In the affidavit, police said Danilo had moved to San Antonio from
Chicago to live with Coles and Cheatom after Child Protective Services
   took him from his mother.

While speaking with police at SAPD headquarters, Coles explained to the
detective that he hit his son because he was raised by his father that
   way.
