   They are. I've been to 3 of the 4 Scandanavians (Sweden, Norway,   
   Denmark, and Finland) at least twice (including again just last month)   
   and would be fine living in any of them. Granted, alcohol tends to be   
   expensive (by design - social ills of alcoholism), but I'm not a heavy   
   drinker, so its not a big deal AFAIC.   
      
   For the next batch mentioned (Canada, Germany, Portugal, New Zealand)   
   I've again been to 3 of the 4 and while some are more 'gritty' than the   
   first batch, I've seen/lived in comparable-to-worse sections in the US,   
   so I'd have no particular qualms with these countries either.   
      
   The last batch is the authoritarian ones which is really where the   
   logical failure is for most Americans: incorrectly conflating socialist   
   principles with authoritarianism, which is a failure to recognize or   
   understand that the form of governance isn't strictly tied.
