   That's nothing. Let's talk drugs.

U.S. Overdose Deaths by Sex, 1999-2023

Over 105,000 persons in the U.S. died from drug-involved overdose in
2023, including from illicit or prescription drugs (Source: CDC WONDER).

U.S. Overdose Deaths, Select Drugs or Drug Categories, 1999-2023

Overall, drug overdose deaths rose from 2019 to 2022 with 107,941 drug
overdose deaths reported in 2022. Overdose deaths declined to 105,007
in 2023. Deaths involving synthetic opioids other than methadone
(primarily illicitly manufactured fentanyl or IMF) decreased from
73,838 overdose deaths reported in 2022, to 72,776 in 2023. Those
involving cocaine continued to increase with 29,449 deaths in 2023
   (Source: CDC WONDER).

U.S. Overdose Deaths Involving Any Opioid by Sex, 1999-2023

Any opioid includes prescription opioids (natural and semi-synthetic
opioids and methadone), heroin, opium, and other synthetic opioids
other than methadone (primarily IMF) and other unspecified narcotics.
Opioid-involved overdose deaths rose from 49,860 in 2019 to 81,806 in
2022 with a significant decrease to 79,358 in 2023 (Source: CDC WONDER).

U.S. Overdose Deaths Involving Prescription Opioids, 1999-2023

Drug overdose deaths involving prescription opioids rose from 3,442 in
1999 to 17,029 in 2017. From 2017 to 2023, there was an overall
decline to 13,026. IMF involvement in overdose deaths that also
involved prescription opioid drugs steadily increased from 2014
through 2021 becoming the main driver of deaths involving prescription
opioids. This data shows that commonly prescribed opioids are no longer
driving the overdose epidemic (Source: CDC WONDER).

U.S. Overdose Deaths Involving Heroin, 1999-2023

Drug overdose deaths involving heroin rose from 3,036 in 2010 to 15,469
in 2016. Since 2016, the number of deaths has trended down with 3,984
reported deaths in 2023. While the overall number of heroin involved
overdose deaths decreased, the proportion of these deaths co-involving
heroin and IMF increased to 80% in 2022 and remained high through 2023
   (Source: CDC WONDER).

Overdose Deaths Involving Stimulants (Cocaine or Psychostimulants with
   Abuse Potential), 1999-2023

Drug overdose deaths rose from 12,122 in 2015 to 59,725 in 2023. Nearly
70% of stimulant involved overdose deaths in 2023 also involved IMF
   (Source: CDC WONDER).

Overdose Deaths Involving Psychostimulants with Abuse Potential, 1999-2023

Drug overdose deaths involving psychostimulants with abuse potential
rose from 5,716 in 2015 to 34,855 deaths in 2023. The number of deaths
involving psychostimulants has increased steadily since 2014 regardless
of opioid involvement; however, those with IMF are the main driver of
   these deaths (Source: CDC WONDER).

U.S. Drug Overdose Deaths Involving Cocaine, by Opioid Involvement, 1999-2023

Drug overdose deaths involving cocaine rose steadily from 6,784 in 2015
   to 15,883 in 2019. From 2019 to 2023, cocaine-involved deaths rose 85%
to 29,449 deaths. The number of deaths with IMF increased significantly
since 2015 and is the main driver of cocaine-involved overdose deaths
   (Source: CDC WONDER).

U.S. Drug Overdose Deaths Involving Benzodiazepines, 1999-2023

In 2023, there were 10,870 drug overdose deaths involving benzodiazepines.
Nearly 70% of overdose deaths involving benzodiazepines also involved IMF
   (Source: CDC WONDER).

U.S. Drug Overdose Deaths Involving Antidepressants, 1999-2023

Drug overdose deaths involving antidepressants steadily rose from 1,749
in 1999 to 5,863 in 2022 and remained steady in 2023 with 5,783 deaths
   (Source: CDC WONDER).
