Removing debris from the understory can lessen the possibility or impact
of wildfire. After 50 years or so of fire suppression fuel has had a
chance to build up. Several of the forests around here have been thinned
to restore them to the parklike appearance of a healthy ponderosa pine/
   douglas fir forest.

I suppose for a New York City boy that isn't a forester 'raking' is pretty
damn close to the process employed.
