   Aggressive fire suppression sounded like a Good Idea at the time. Funny   
   how the attempts to mess with nature have unforeseen consequences after 50   
   years or so. I sure attempts to mitigate climate change will be different   
   though.   
      
   It is ugly. A fire here in 2003 burned a swath of a popular recreation   
   area. The brush has comeback but not many trees. There was a patch of   
   fairy slippers, the only native orchid in this area, that I looked forward   
   to every year. They are dependent on specific soil fungi. The area was   
   burned down to mineral soil and they aren't coming back. Shooting stars   
   and dogtooth violets have but they don't have the mycorrhiza requirements.
