|    Florida - Authorities Tell Condo People     |

XPost: talk.politics.misc, alt.politics.usa, soc.culture.usa       XPost: alt.politics.republicans       From: 186282@ud0s4.net              https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13899389/Florida-condo-       pringbrook-Gardens-Fort-Lauderdale-collapses.html              Elderly Florida residents are being asked to immediately       leave their pricey condos behind as officials warn of       'structural problems' with the building's foundation.              Springbrook Gardens is pushing the 12 residents to to       evacuate by Friday - leaving many in distress as they       scramble to find a new place to stay.              Eviction notices have been plastered across the 18-unit       building after an engineer told the city's building       department that the foundations in one of the sections       are in bad condition and could collapse any time.              'Everybody was in shock. It hasn't hit me yet, it really       hasn't. [We were told] building is unsafe, get the hell       out,' said Warren Sackler, a retired New York professor.              The warning comes shortly after it was revealed that       faulty support columns in the tenant garage and pool       deck led to the collapse of Champlain Towers South,       Miami in 2021 - resulting in the death of 98 people.              . . .               They've been finding more and more such structures,        now that they're BOTHERING to check.               A LOT of these things were whipped-up FAST AND CHEAP        back in the late 70s thru 80s ... and various reports        say that "inspections" often involved an envelope        full of cash.               NOW ... the salt mist has penetrated all the supporting        columns and such and they're cracking to pieces. The        owners sometimes tried to just slap some plaster and        paint on the decaying supports - "See ! All fixed !" -        but really .....               The one that DID collapse (first) was "fixed" like that.               When it's support columns/foundations you really CAN'T        fix it ... gotta tear it all down and start over.               City pols - they didn't CARE how crappy these things        were. They saw 'prestige' and magnets for rich people        and the tax/biz revenue they'd bring. Likely most        are dead/senile at THIS point, so there's no getting        back at them.               Hate to say it, but that whole generation of condos,        esp ones kind right on the beach, are probably in        the same horrible condition now. The MONEY that's        gonna be involved moving (oft old) people and        tearing/rebuilding ... it's gonna be just INSANE.               Betcha mass quantities of lawyers are DROOLING.              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
