   I assume they've went to LEDs but in the '60s the outing club spelunking   
   contingent used carbide lanterns so a supply of calcium carbide was on   
   hand. Garbage cans were galvanized sheet metal. Combined with a tea candle   
   to make sure your were far away before the combustible mixture made its   
   way out of a hole punched in the tight fitting lid you could launch the   
   lid with a satisfying boom.
