I was hiking at Chiricahua in southern AZ, almost on the border, and bears
were the last thing on my mind. I scared some poor bear getting his
bedtime drink at a creek and he motivated up a scree slope like his ass
   was on fire.

The strangest encounter was at Kings Canyon. Coming back from the
trailhead at dusk I saw a treed bear at the side of the road. I stopped
the car, got out, and took some photos. While I'm standing there the bear
shinnies down and walks off. I missed the cub who was also up the tree. He
climbs down and goes off following mom.

My puzzle was if she wasn't bothered by a tourist standing there 20' away
taking pictures what had treed her in the first place? The bears at Kings
are very used to humans. The campground sites all have steel lockers with
the advice to take anything in your car that has a scent and put it into
the locker or a bear will show up with a can opener. They have graphic
photos of torn up vehicles to make the point.
