   I was on a road trip with my wife and dog just a few days ago when we   
   got out of the car to hike around Valles Caldera National Preserve in   
   New Mexico.  Another couple who now live in Austin, Texas struck up a   
   conversation with us that began with them complimenting the fine looks   
   of our Kelpie dog. After some conversation, they remarked that they had   
   lived in Eugene, Oregon before moving to Texas. (My wife had lived in   
   Eugene also before moving to our current state in the Rocky Mountain   
   region.)  The couple remarked how crime infested and dysfunctional   
   Portland is now, largely due to meth and fentanyl addicts having reduced   
   much of the city to a crime infested, Third World-like slum. They, like   
   you, remembered a time when Portland was a nice, relatively safe and   
   prosperous city.  I have no doubt your memory of Portland is accurate,   
   but it is, sadly, no longer an accurate representation of the city.
