Personally I rather like the Dracula episode. As I recall, all the polls
I've seen indicate that it is well above average in popularity among Buffy
fans. But that's OK. No episode can suit everybody. Fortunately there are
   143 to choose from.

Speaking to the content, I would note that the notion of the storm heralding
Dawn is open to debate, but it certainly does herald Dracula. That's
straight from Stroker's Dracula. As are many other elements such as
Xander's bug eating and the succubi attacking Giles. A good amount of
thought went into linking this episode to the source, while keeping it a
   Buffy episode as well.

On the other hand, the previously unknown castle probably does herald Dawn
by demonstrating that reality had changed. The appearance of Dawn at the
end is certainly a surprise change in reality. (And one of my favorite
moments in the series. Instantly sisters with their simultaneous whining
   plea to Mom.)

More broadly speaking, Dracula serves the same function all Buffy season
opening episodes do by offering hints of what's in store this season (and
maybe beyond). Xander's maturation. Willow's growing power and
recklessness. Buffy's search to understand what she is, with even a hint of
more demonic connection than previously imagined. And the big season themes
of blood and death (and even rebirth). From the big picture point of view
it's hardly a throw-away episode, yet still (IMO) plenty entertaining at the
   story of the day level.

I would have liked to have seen Anya (jealous Xander), and Spike,
interact with Dracula. See who really IS the baddest.
