The history of the phase "MY BAD"

By Skyebeka on August 28th, 2012: The original phrase was "my bag". I'm a
child of the 70's. I remember, I was there. I used it, we all used it. It
meant "my fault". Yes, it was also used to mean "I'm into to that kind of
thing, that is my bag". The
movie Clueless got it wrong, thrusting it into the mainstream as "My bad". If
you weren't around in the 70's you wouldn't know this.

By BridgwaterBlitz on November 4th, 2010: The phrase "My bag" was used
commonly at least as far back as the 1940's. My father, his family and friends
all used it back then in Minnesota. Most of everyone I knew used "my bag" in
Kansas in the 70's and 80's.
It was always used as shortened slang to mean, "I made a mistake...

By Anonymous on May 12th, 2009: My wife and I have this argument all the time.
YES in the mid 80's to early 90's it was MY BAG as yes my fault or used to
denote fault. I am 44 and my wife is 33. She claimed it was never my bag but
she is wrong. I am so
thankful other people my age remember.

By Bob on August 16, 2007: The origin of this phrase actually comes from the
card game "Spades". The game consists of 2 teams of 2 and each player had to
predict how many hands he could take. If they took more hands than they
   estimated these are counted
as sandbags and work against them in the scoring. After the round the player
that predicted wrong would often say to his partner my bag meaning my fault or
my mistake. Thus, when the young people heard their mothers and fathers using
   "My bag" at the card
table, they took it to the basketball courts.

History of Spades: Spades is thought to have originated in the Midwestern
United States (perhaps Cincinnati, Ohio) in the late 1930s. It was said to
have been invented by college students who enjoyed both Whist and Bridge. They
   were looking for a fast-
paced game that was competitive and strategic. The game slowly spread to other
college campuses in the midwest, but the game did not really take off until
the dramatic events of the Second World War brought so much of America's youth
   into the military.
It would also be played in factory break-rooms and company office lunchrooms
all across the country, allowing it to bridge the gap between social classes.

It is interesting that the game is not even mentioned in many relatively
recent books on card games including the Official Rules of Card Games (57th
Edition) published by the United States Playing Card Company of Cincinnati,
Ohio in 1969. For such a
popular card game it has led a somewhat underground existence. It has only
been recently that the game has taken on a more official status with clubs and
tournaments. Joe Andrews included it in his 2006 Grand Prix World Series of
   Classic Card Games. For
many of the same reasons that the game gained popularity during the 1940s war
years, it has exploded on the internet. http://www.rulesofspades
