Millionaire Joss Whedon Says Marvel Short-Changed Him On 'Avengers'

'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' creator Joss Whedon this weekend said he has made
more money from 'Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog', an independently-financed
2008 musical series, than from Marvel’s 2012 The Avengers, which grossed
over $1.5 billion worldwide. Whedon wrote and directed the superhero flick,
which became the fourth highest-grossing film in history.

“I made more money off 'Dr. Horrible' than the first 'Avengers' movie,”
   said
Whedon during a Q&A at Paleyfest NY at the Paley Center for Media, 'Variety'
   reports.

Though his assertion might stun casual observers–'The Avengers' had a $220
million production budget–it’s not the first time Whedon has spoken out
about his payday from the notoriously tight-fisted Marvel.

“They are in the business of hiring the guy who hasn’t had a big success,
because they don’t have to pay that guy very much,” Whedon told the 'Wall
   Street Journal' earlier this year.

In fact, Whedon has been fending off high-payday rumors for years. Back in
2013, Deadline Hollywood reported that Whedon was getting a deal worth $100
million from Disney. Whedon quickly took to his own blog, Whedonesque, to
say he was not, in fact, getting paid $100 million for 'Avengers' sequel:

"I was going to let it slide, but I’ve got this sour taste in my mouth.
(Mmmm, lemonade!). Some facts are not facts. I’m not going to go into the
whole thing, but jeepers, I’m not getting $100 mil on 'Avengers 2'. If I
were, I would come on this site and laugh and laugh and laugh. I’m not
making Downey money. I’m making A LOT, which is exciting. I’m not
   pretending
to be a poor farmer, an Everyman, an ANYman. But that number is nuts."

   [snip]

“Marvel can be very cheap, God knows,” Whedon told 'Deadline' in 2013.
   “They
can also be sensible and frugal.”

   [snip]

It’s not clear what Whedon made from 'Dr. Horrible', but Whedon was likely
paid in the very low seven digits for the first 'Avengers'. That means he
was a bargain for Marvel then, but he seems to have been better compensated
in movies since. Thanks mostly to 'Avengers: Age of Ultron,' Whedon banked
an estimated $32 million in 2014, the last time he appeared on our Celebrity
100 list. (We altered criteria this year to focus on front-of-camera talent,
so do not have 2015 earnings for him.)

Whedon probably earned around $10 million all told for 'Avengers: Age of
Ultron', a payday which would not have been possible had he not proved
himself the first time round. Though the 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' creator
rejected the $100 million figure, he is thought to be receiving a fraction
of that per year on a multi-year deal with Disney, meaning this indie star
has long since avenged his first poor payday.
