It's radically different. It didn't suit FOX (and honestly has problems), so
Whedon essentially started over from scratch with significant restructuring
of the whole series plot. Pieces of the pilot were cannibalized to be
included in multiple later episodes, but most of it never made it to air. (I
think it's on the DVD.) It's still an interesting version and I think more
powerful as an episode than the aired one.

Dollhouse really struggled getting off the ground - figuring out what it
was. The shuffling around (probably mixed in with production deadlines) also
generated substantial story sequence contradictions. The first season, IMO,
also got bogged down in its version of a white slavery theme/issue. That's
certainly a legitimate issue for the construct (implanting personalities
upon a living body which is put up for hire), but ultimately not what the
series was really about, or what made it interesting. (In brief, the nature
of identity.) By the time all that got settled, it was too late. The second
season became in large part a mad dash to complete years worth of story
outline in a handful of episodes. Oh, well.

So, there's certainly plenty to criticize about the series. I can't really
fault people for turning away from it in response. Still, it had its
rewards. Some very interesting characters are developed with a considerable
amount of excellent acting. Individual episodes are some times quite
compelling - thought provoking and/or exciting. It's not a comedy in the way
that Buffy is, but the Whedon humor and approach to emotional resonance
still regularly appears. And the whole concept makes you question what
defines an individual. Or, for the more religiously inclined, what's a soul?
In heart it's a classic sci-fi construct that posits a technological
capability and then asks what the societal consequences of it would be.
Personally, I'm quite happy that I dove into the series from start to end.
   It enriched my life.
