|    Where Did Sarah's Career Go?    |

From: daviderl31@yahoo.com              http://www.wetpaint.com/sarah-michelle-gellar-now-career-1535575/              Where Did Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Career Go (And How Do We Get It Back)?              When NBC announced the development of a Cruel Intentions TV show, it seemed       like our dreams for Sarah Michelle Gellar were coming true.              Perhaps Kathryn Merteuil, SMG’s second-most iconic character — behind Buffy       the titular vampire slayer, of course — could finally grant her a second act       in her career, we thought. But those dreams ended this week when NBC quietly       cancelled the project — after keeping it on the back burner for months.              And speaking of back burners, what happened to Sarah’s career? After all,       this is her fourth TV failure since 2010 — coming after one-season wonders       Ringer and The Crazy Ones and shelved pilot The Wonderful Maladys.              Her career downturn wouldn’t be so surprising if her “It Girl” status       hadn’t       been so zeitgeisty the late ‘90s and early ‘00s.              Even after leaving behind critical acclaim of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, SMG       helped take three movies across the $100 million line from 1997 to 2004:       Scream 2, Scooby-Doo, and The Grudge. (By contrast, her last movie released       in U.S. theaters was 2008’s The Air I Breathe, which made just $25K.)              And this is a woman who regularly ranked high on lists like Maxim’s Hot 100,       People’s Most Beautiful, and Entertainment Weekly’s Top 100 TV Icons.              So what happened?              Even if her movies and TV shows haven’t done her justice lately, the       39-year-old is a fine actress. Sure, Cruel Intentions co-star Reese       Witherspoon’s career has taken her to Academy Awards heights, but no one can       say she was more charismatic than SMG in that movie.              The problem with her 2010s career isn’t the quality of the projects,       either — Ringer and The Crazy Ones best all of her movies on review       aggregator Metacritic — nor is it her appeal — the latter show earned her a       People’s Choice Award.              So perhaps the problem is one of hype and heightened expectations. There’s       no way SMG could have held onto her teen-idol status in her 30s, nor should       she be have been expected to.              Plus, we’re only focusing on success by conventional Hollywood standards,       when there are so many other measures. For example, she’s been married to       Freddie Prinze Jr. for 14 years, and they’re raising two thriving kids       together.              Still, it seems Sarah wants to act and to find a successful project, so we       want that for her.              As proven again and again in Hollywood — by career rejuvenators like Robert       Downey Jr. and Matthew McConaughey — it only takes one script to get you       back in Hollywood’s good graces.                     David              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
