   Yep!   
      
   The person that is vamped gets to retain the memories and by extension   
   the personality. The soul is gone and the vampire takes its place.   
   Unless some gypsy curses them or, in Spike's case, seek out some shaman,   
   in which case their soul is returned to them.   
   Soul in the Buffyverse seems to be 'conscience'.
