Former 'Buffy' star on road to recovery after a troubled decade

There’s probably a thing or two that not even the biggest “Buffy the
   Vampire
Slayer” fan might not know about Nicholas Brendon.

For example, Brendon, who played Xander Harris for seven seasons of the cult
classic horror/drama television series, has been busy sharpening his karaoke
   skills.

“My go-to right now is ‘Sweet Transvestite’ from ‘Rocky Horror Picture
   Show,’”
the actor and writer said. “On these drives to events, I’ve been listening
to a lot of musicals. I love them. I didn’t have that coming up.”

The 47-year-old, who appears this weekend at Charleston Shocka-Con at the
Beni Kedem Center, slid into acting sideways.

When he began college, he was a baseball player and then took theater
classes to work on a stutter.

His acting career didn’t take off immediately. He wound up with small parts
in B-movies like “Children of the Corn III” and television shows like
“Married with Children,” before landing his role on “Buffy.”

Brendon appeared in 143 out of 144 episodes, though he laughed about it.

“What’s important is that I was paid for all 144.”

The only actor who was in more episodes of the show was Sarah Michelle
Gellar, who played “Buffy,” though Brendon thought she might have missed
   one
because she was hosting “Saturday Night Live.”

Brendon’s life has taken a series of bad turns since he and the rest of the
“Scooby Gang” on the show disbanded in 2003. He’s struggled with
   alcoholism
and has been arrested several times for trashing motel rooms and assault,
which he said was connected to his ongoing battles with depression and
   anxiety.

He’s still working through what he called a lifelong problem.
