Buffy The Vampire Slayer: 10 Hidden Details About Spike's Crypt You Never
   Noticed

Even vampires need somewhere to sleep. Here are 10 hidden details and facts
about Spike's crypt in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

   BY KAYLEENA PIERCE-BOHEN
   MAR 19, 2020

Sunnydale had a striking number of cemeteries (twelve!), but only Restfield
Cemetery housed one of Buffy the Vampire Slayer's most iconic characters –
Spike. Amidst the headstones stood Hawley mausoleum, a dank, imposing final
resting place for Ethel and James Hawley, as well as other family members.
It might not have looked like much to Buffy Summers and the Scooby Gang, but
it became Spike's headquarters for several years before he left for Africa
   to regain his soul.

Despite being a vampire and needing few creature comforts, Spike spent his
time transforming the place. It soon became a featured location for all
sorts of activities in the series, from romantic liaisons to epic fights and
many emotional revelations. For those fans who want to spend a little more
time in Spike's world, here are 10 hidden details about his crypt.

   10
   IT WASN'T HIS FIRST CHOICE

Prior to deciding on turning the Hawley Mausoleum into his ultimate bachelor
pad, Spike was living in Xander Harris's basement, which wasn't ideal for
either party. When he informed Anya he'd be finding a crypt in one of
Sunnydale's many cemeteries, he set out the same night to scout a spot.

While trolling the cemeteries, Spike first considered the Alpert mausoleum,
the exterior of which he was seen measuring. The Hawley mausoleum was much
larger, however, and mostly empty, save for a few dusty statues, urns, and
paraphernalia from the prominent Sunnydale family.

   9
   IT HAS ELECTRICITY

Despite being located in a dank mausoleum, Spike's crypt has electricity.
Considering that vampires sleep during the day, it's helpful that Spike has
an option for modern light sources, and doesn't have to resort to filling
his residence with hundreds of flickering candles (as on point as that would
   be).

Spike doesn't always sleep during the day like the majority of vampire kind,
so he can be found staying out of the sun and watching his favorite soap
opera, Passions. Spike was often quite irksome when anyone interrupted him,
   including his on-again-off-again girlfriend, Harmony.

   8
   IT HAS A SECRET DOOR

Though he didn't have a revolving bookcase, Spike did have a secret door
accessible through a hole in its floor that led below his crypt. The cavern
was part of the extensive tunnel network beneath Sunnydale, which Spike used
to move about unnoticed and pop up in different locations around town.

The lower bowels of the crypt were used to house various things that Spike
stole, either from around Sunnydale or the Summers house. The secret door
was also an alternate means for visitors to use, in case they wanted to
avoid detection at the prominent front entrance.

   7
   IT CONTAINS A BUFFY SHRINE

After Spike accepted his feelings for the Slayer, he began breaking into the
Summers house to steal various trinkets and small objects, arranging them in
what became a sizable shrine. Aside from pictures and possessions, it housed
a doll in Buffy's likeness that he used to practice fighting with and later,
to ask the real Slayer out on a date.

Among the most notable pieces, there were pictures of Buffy drawn by
Angelus, some bloody gauze that Riley used to treat one of Buffy's wounds,
and several of Buffy's stakes. When Buffy discovered the shrine, she was
disgusted and horrified, and punched Spike with such force he flew into and
   destroyed it.

   6
   IT DOESN'T HOUSE A COFFIN

A large part of vampire culture revolves around the strange idiosyncrasies
associated with the creatures of the night. Legends tell that they fear
crucifixes, holy water, and garlic, and that the only way they can sleep
during the day is in a coffin that prevents them from being burned alive in
   daylight.

There's a notable absence of a true coffin in Spike's crypt. He prefers to
sleep on a giant stone slab, with nothing more than a ratty blanket to cover
him. Vampires don't experience changes in temperature like humans, so the
cold wouldn't bother Spike. Still, the stone slab can't be comfortable.

[wrong! it has a large stone coffin in the middle it. Spike hid in it
when (can't remember who) was looking for him. Plus he ws lying on it during
   his song in OMWF.]

   5
IT HAS ALL THE CREATURE COMFORTS

After Buffy's death in Season 5, Spike attempted to spruce up his crypt with
all the typical creature comforts of a proper home. He got a refrigerator,
some more lamps for ambient lighting, and a few pieces of furniture. One
armchair he even acquired from the Summers residence to remind him of the
   Slayer.

The lower section of the crypt even got refurbished, with a bar going in one
corner and a double-sized bed with proper blankets and pillows. As a
finishing touch, Spike added Persian carpets, giving it a cultured
aesthetic. Sadly, most of the lower level was destroyed when Spike housed
   some demon eggs in it.

   4
IT'S WHERE MOST OF SPIKE'S CONQUESTS HAPPENED

During Spike's early days plotting to cause chaos and mayhem in Sunnydale
with his ditzy girlfriend Harmony, most of their plans never came to
fruition. When they weren't arguing over execution, they were going at it
like rabbits in the bowels of his crypt. It became the place most of his
   romantic trysts would occur.

Spike rekindled his love affair with his sire, Drusilla, in his crypt, and
in Season 5, he did things only Buffy fans could imagine to the Buffybot
that The Trio made him. In Season 6, Buffy would stop by for wanton angry
sex, which while potentially degrading for Spike, was never something he
   opposed.

   3
IT'S BEEN USED AS A REFUGE

When Buffy's loved ones are in peril and she needs a place for them to be
   safe, she turns to the last person her enemies would think is her ally;
Spike. In Season 5, when Glory was hunting Dawn to gain access to The Key,
Buffy entrusted Spike with her safety and brought her to his crypt for
   protection.

Buffy's mother Joyce has even been around to Spike's crypt, spending
evenings watching Passions. When the pair both found out that they were big
fans of the show, it became a way for them to bond (much to Buffy's
chagrin). It was considered to be one of the most bizarre soap operas of its
