Before she headed to LA to try and make it big as an actress, Cordelia Chase
was an integral part of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Although she was
introduced to viewers as Sunnydale's "Queen of Mean," Cordelia managed to
worm her way into the fans' good graces when she helped the Scoobies in
   their time of need.

Despite her popularity, Cordelia also managed to earn the viewers'
compassion when they realized she was just as insecure and lonely as anyone
else. It's just a shame that she reverted into an ice queen again before she
graduated. Take a look at the following instances to remember the emotional
roller coaster Cordelia Chase took fans on...

   10
   Hated: Bullying Willow

When Cordelia was first introduced, she seemed like she was a nice person.
She allowed Buffy to share her textbook and offered to show her around the
school. However, the viewers' opinion of her changed when she decided to
mock Willow's fashion sense and said that she was a loser.

When Buffy decided to start hanging out with Willow and Xander, Cordelia
took to insulting her as well. She may not have been a vampire, but Cordy
   has one vicious bite.

   9
Sympathetic: Cordelia Admits She Is Lonely

Through most of season 1, Cordelia was maintained her queen bee facade.
However, in "Out of Mind, Out of Sight," she dropped her guard a little when
she admitted to Buffy that she feels alone. Cordelia went on to say that
despite her popularity, none of her "friends" really know her, and she
wondered if they even like her.

What makes the scene even sadder is the fact that Cordelia didn't feel like
she was being listened to. Yet, she would continue the wicked queen of high
school routine because it's better than feeling alone. This was the first
time many fans could relate and sympathize with Cordelia.

   8
Hated: Obsession With Becoming Homecoming Queen

By season 3, Cordelia was shown to be a key asset to the Scooby Gang and was
mostly civil with its members. However, there were times where she couldn't
hold back her venomous bite and she would still mistreat them. An example of
this was in the episode "Homecoming" when she goes to war with Buffy over
   the Homecoming Queen title.

Since Cordelia was too wrapped up in herself, she forgot to tell Buffy to
get her picture taken for the yearbook. As a result, Buffy decided to run
against her. When Cordelia heard the news, she wasted no time in insulting
Buffy. It was a side no one wanted to see again.

   7
Sympathetic: Revelation Her Father Is Broke

Another moment where the viewers got to see Cordelia's vulnerable side was
when she admitted to Xander her family was bankrupt. In "The Prom," Xander
was shocked to see Cordelia working in an expensive boutique since she came
   from a wealthy family.

While she tried to hide the truth, Cordelia ended up telling Xander that she
had to get a job to pay for a prom dress she had on layaway. She also
revealed that her car, cell phone, and even her home had been taken away,
too. It's a lot of pressure for an 18-year-old to take on.

   6
Hated: Blaming Buffy For Her Breakup

After her break-up with Xander, Cordelia decided to go back to being an ice
queen and decided to freeze the Scoobies out. In "The Wish," Cordelia
decided to purge herself of all things Xander after she caught him cheating
on her. However, instead of blaming him and Willow, Cordelia decided that
all her bad luck is Buffy's fault.

This led her to inadvertently create a parallel universe as wished to Anya
that she lived in a world where Buffy didn't come to Sunnydale. Cordelia
then took great pleasure in her Buffy-less world — but not for long.

   5
Sympathetic: Wrong Place At The Wrong Time

While it was quite entertaining to see Cordelia go up against the Big Bads,
fans couldn't help but worry about the impact it had on her mental health.
Cordelia may not be the easiest person to get along with but that didn't
   mean she deserved to die.

She was always seen to in the wrong place at the wrong time. Remember when
she found the headless body of their science teacher? Or when she discovered
the AV club and her boyfriend Kevin? It's a lot for anyone to go through.

   4
Hated: Dumping Xander On St. Valentine's Day

Although Xander and Cordelia had a somewhat loving relationship, everyone
knew they weren't right for each other. For one, they continuously hurt one
another — whether it was because of Xander's feelings for Willow or because
Cordelia was ashamed to be seen with him.

In one upsetting instance, Cordelia decided to dump Xander on Valentine's
Day to protect her reputation. Although they rekindled their relationship at
the end of the episode, the fact that she cared more about what her
"friends" thought than her boyfriend proved she was more than a bit shallow.

   3
   Sympathetic: When Xander Cheated

When Xander and Willow cheated on Cordelia and Oz, respectively, fans
couldn't help but side with the cheerleader. Especially when they could see
how devastated she was by Xander's betrayal. Everyone saw how much Cordelia
had changed for him. She dropped her friend group and her reputation had
taken a hit, though she was a lot less shallow and selfish.

Considering Cordelia had confessed that she was in love with him, fans'
hearts broke for her when she walked in on him and Willow kissing. No one
even blamed Cordelia when she decided she wanted nothing to do with Xander.

   2
   Hated: Trying To Steal Angel

Before she and Buffy called a stalemate, Cordelia got on the wrong end of
Bangel fans when she tried to split Buffy and Angel up. In the early stages
of Bangel's relationship, Cordelia made a play for the vampire every chance
she got. She would flirt and dance with him, get him to walk her home, or
was glued to his side in battle.

Cordelia even told Buffy that she should be afraid of a little competition
because she was going to try and win Angel. Cordelia's determination to ruin
   Buffy's life just got annoying.

   1
   Sympathetic: Getting Impaled

After witnessing Xander cheating on her, Cordelia fled from the scene hurt
and devastated. But it wasn't just a broken heart she had to contend with.
After she ran away, Cordelia fell through the rotten stairs and impaled
herself on a piece of metal rebar.

As she was recovering in hospital, Cordelia broke up with Xander and told
