Well, it's true that from Series 1-6 "there's something very sad but funny
about a buncha blokes trapped 3 million years in deep space with zero chance
of getting laid" but that's because there aren't any women around! Of
course logically it should be even sadder and funnier when it's "about a
buncha blokes trapped 3 million years in deep space with zero chance of
getting laid" and there's a real woman around. It isn't, though, but that's
because the loss of Rimmer upset the character dynamics AND the loss of Rob
Grant did immeasurable damage to the writing process.

As I understand it (inasmuch as I understand anything these days) Glam
Kochanski was brought it so that they could appeal more to the American
market with the presence of a hot babe in PVC.

Um..... Sorry, my mind wet elsewhere for a moment then.

One of the original inspirations for the show was Porridge, which is really
a two-man show in a confined space with assorted supporting eccentrics; they
maybe wanted to get back to what worked in earlier series that didn't work
in S7. And this was also after Craig Charles had been in prison on remand.
