This process has been going on since 2001, when I first moved to
   Canada.

First, you have to apply for Permanent Resident status. This status
essentially means you can come and go as you please and are a legal
resident of the country. You can't vote and you aren't a citizen, but
   you can do everything else.

I didn't get that status until 2003. Once you have PR status, you
have to spend 1095 out of 1460 days in Canada (3 out of 4 years). If
you meet the time requirements, you can apply for citizenship, a
process that can take up to a year.

I made my citizenship application in April of this year, and I'm
already most of the way through the process.

Moving to a different country is definitely a time consuming (and
expensive process). And we have Red Dwarf to thank for it. :)
