There are two markets where it's very popular. One is commuters.
They're stuck on a train for an hour, why not catch up on TV, watch a
movie or whatever without having to add too much to the burden of
their usual work gear? Similarly, people buy devices as entertainment
when they're doing one off travelling like holidays.

The other is teenagers. There have been some recent studies in the UK
where it's been found that once a teen has a phone or ipod style
device capable of feeding them entertainment they're happy to hang out
with the rest of the family and while Mum and Dad enjoy a traditional
sitcom the kid can be watching something more attuned to their own
tastes. They also tend to use mobile devices in their bedroom where
they might not have access to the nicer TV or whatever.

I commute and I download some stuff to watch on my MP3 player. The
picture is incredibly sharp, and although the screen is tiny, the
viewing distance is closer, so the overall effect is not all that
different to watching a standard TV from across the living room. I
find it handy for watching things in chunks of time where I'd
otherwise be doing very little - five minute waits for trains, ten
minutes in a queue and so on.
