   *ahem*

SBB is right. Two outstanding series ended their runs at the height of their
popularity (Spaced, Black Books) much to the dismay of the hardcore fan
base. Had either continued past their ends, I think that Tim and Daisy would
wind up much like Dan and Roseanne Conner (Roseanne) and Bernard Black would
have wound up dead, upside down in a pub toilet. The shows were wonderful
and to continue something wayyyy past a natural end (MASH, Cheers) would
just simply piss people off. Shows today tend to pander to the advertising
giants anyway, at least here, and really have no impact on the audience.
Lost seems to be falling into that trap (Get those damn people off the
island already! What is this, Gilligan's Island?), demanding a larger
advertising dollar and generating hype it can't live up to (Why the hell is
   Hurley still fat?).
It's hard to continue a hit show and come up with fresh ideas. South Park is
an anomaly simply because it tends to rely on current events and social
commentary to further their agenda. Red Dwarf is a good show, I love it, but
after a while when the characters change and morph into something they
weren't in Series 3 and the writers have to struggle to come up with fresh
ideas, it starts to suck. Writing suffers, character development suffers,
and the show as a whole suffers. Having a Series 9, or even a movie, now
would only serve to do what Star Wars Episode One did: piss people off who
were expecting the same kind of outstanding story/character/plot that
they've come to expect. Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to see Series 9,
but I worry that it would suffer and I would be disappointed, much in the
same way Series 7 and 8 disappointed many people. Not all, but many.
