During the show I watched (Nova ScienceNow, I think) a few weeks ago
on SETI, it was mentioned that they do have a top-of-the-line dish
array that will be able to collect several thousand times more data
per year than the old setup. The problem they have now is that the
dishes are collecting so much data, current-generation computers are
not fast enough/don't have enough storage to process all of the data,
so they end up having to discard a lot of it. They've traded one
   problem for another.

I downloaded SETI@Home on Monday and installed it on my work computer
(is that violating the spirit of the project?) and it's a totally
   different application today.

The version I had used a few years ago ran as a tray icon and screen
saver. When the screen saver kicked in, it would display a graph of
the data it was processing. The new version doesn't have the same
look and is based on a platform that allows you to process data for
several other distributed applications using the same GUI.

I'll keep it on my work computer until the IT guys give me trouble.
