Sad Thoughts On "Hop on Pop"
   27 Sep 12 13:08:03

"It was so sad, they way they hopped on pop!"

So Homer said in the episode where he was at the library reading books as fast
   as he could.

Well, now I have a sad story to tell you about "Hop On Pop".

When I was seven or eight years old I remember reading a Dr. Seuss book to my
younger brother Peter. I do not remember the title of the book, but I
distinctly remember the following lines of text (approximate):

   Mr. Brown, Mrs. Brown
   Pup up, Brown down
   Pup down, Where is Brown?
Where is Brown? There is Brown!
Mr. Brown is out of town!
   Back Black
Brown came back with Mr. Black.

Whenever I read these lines my brother would laugh. He was only one or two
   years old at the time.

Down through the years when I would see my brother I would sometimes say to
   him:

"Where is Brown? There is Brown!
Mr. Brown is out of town!"

and he would laugh because he would remember this from when I read to him when
   he was a baby.

Now my brother Peter is dying of emphysema in the hospital. He is only 49
years old. I went to the web and Google'd "Mr. Brown is out of town" and
discovered that it is a line of text from "Hop On Pop". So it was "Hop On
Pop" that I had been reading
to my brother all those years ago.

I am at work right now, but I am going to see Peter in the hospital tomorrow
night. You guys already know what I am going to say to him when I get there.
If he is still alive to hear it.
