   The only time I remember seeing the parent was in that episode with the   
   tornado, Ned explodes after the awful job the townspeople did on   
   rebuilding his home, and then it's revealed  his weird childhood and his   
   Beatnik Parents.   
      
   So I thought this was the first time the parents are actually present,   
   though yes, Homer seemed to know them.   
      
   They've certainly kept their lifestyle a long time, fifty years at least.   
   Most Beats turned into hippies if they didn't turn into squares.
