Popularity is rarely an indicator of quality, of course.

One of those shows that polarises viewers. I've known people to
complain about the content, claiming it was unsuitable for children,
as though they didn't realise it was a show primarily made for
   adults...

I really liked the first 10 or 12 seasons of the Simpsons. The
satirical nature and the taking the piss out of sacred cows very much
appealed to me (quite a rare thing to come from Seppo land). The
writing was very well done and quite clever at times.

Would have been much better with the Bart character, IMO.

After season 10 or so, the quality of the writing began to decline
progressively. Last time I watched an episode was a couple of years
ago, and I couldn't even see it through to the end of the show.
No show can sustain the quality for 25+ years, they should have had
the class to call it quits well over ten years ago. It's just a parody
   of itself now, if anything.
