   From what I've read, it was Krusty's depressive,   
   self loathing offstage behavior that was partially   
   based on David Letterman. Krusty was also inspired   
   in part on a TV clown that Matt Groening watched as

   Dave's last show this week got me thinking about Krusty. I remember reading   
   somewhere (many years ago) an interview with Matt Groening where he   
   mentioned the character of Krusty was based on Letterman. I've also heard he   
   was based on one of the show's writers.   
      
   Maybe both?   
      
   At any rate, every time I see Letterman, I expect him to shout "Hey   
   HEYYYYYY!!"
