From: garvey@simpsonsarchive.com              Intriguingly thoughtful and offbeat episode, with a sentimentality that       actually seems to work without feeling rehashed or unearned. Not really a       comedy episode as much as a slightly comic exploration of a parental anxiety,       but I'll take it, especially        over a too-wacky comedy or groanworthy satire. If a show is going to be around       for this long, it can't keep doing the same things, and some recent       experimental episodes have done well. The specific perspective here is nice       too and it feels born out of a        real place. I was reminded of some dream-based revelations in GABF16, but       there may be some others that achieved a similar effect (even Bart's brief       nightmares in 3F02). This reference/parody has been done on other shows       before, but I also enjoyed the        apt (and yet surprisingly graphic outside a TOH) Terminator 2 pl       yground-nightmare scene in particular.              I'm also happy to see the revival of special Gracie (and Fox) logo audio, a       rarity in recent years outside of TOH episodes and spinoffs, even when some       variations would seem to fit perfectly (most are just a repeated line from the       episode). This was just        right for the mood. I'm rather far behind in listing out special versions, so       I can't say how long it's been since the Fox logo has been altered, but it's       probably been over a decade if you don't count the "30th Century" version in       Simpsorama.              UABF21 repeat: this 7:00 rerun (an experimental episode that did NOT work for       me) was joined in progress here, with the usual shortened NABF21 opening at       about 7:13, and half the episode starting with the last 2 minutes of act 2 a       few minutes later. No        compression or differences noted. It was the first season 34 episode to run a       third time, though, which is a bit odd considering how many episodes have yet       to run a *second* time.              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
