I think Australians use "typical" Aussie colloquialisms more when they're
away from home turf. It may have been in more common use back then but,
from my experience at least, it's always been a joke term that no-one really
uses while keeping a straight face.

I had forgotten about that one, Vic, but I could always claim that he's
actually a Sheep Fucker (technical term for someone born in New Zealand) and
doesn't really count. In practical terms, however, he's an Aussie so I
   guess you got me there!

In the same vein, you could also include Mel Gibson. He was born in the US
and lives in the US, but I believe he is actually an Australian citizen.
His father moved the family here in the late 60's to avoid his army of sons
being drafted into the army and sent to Vietnam. I remember seeing his
father, Hutton, as a contestant on a TV quiz show (Ford Superquiz) here in
the 80's. Mel's mother was an Aussie sheila by birth too.
