   The ONLY Roman-period reference to Christ is in Tacitus' *Annals* and that's   
   probably about a century after the fact and may not even be genuine. (Though   
   personally I think it is.)   
      
   The entire quote is this:   
      
   "Auctor nominis eius Christus Tibero imperitante per procuratorem Pontium   
   Pilatum supplicio adfectus erat."   
      
   Which, if my highschool Latin and four years in college serve me correctly   
   means something like this:   
      
   "The originator of the name, Christ, was executed as a criminal by the   
   procurator Pontius Pilate during the reign of Tiberius."
