   But those things never happened.... First and second officer here don't seem   
   to be a full time job. They have the rank, just in case something happens to   
   the CO. But in the mean time they actually do something useful.

   Gold shirt, yes, command and control (of the ship, as in helm and   
   navigation).   
   Red, also has communications. Not only engineering and security. One might   
   see communication as part of engineering here I think. Technical services.   
   Blue, indeed science and medical.   
   Sometimes Green for the CO.   
   BTW, 'Where No Man Has Gone Before' had no red shirt and Spock wore Gold!   
   And Uhura did not start out in Red, but in Gold.
