   Memory Alpha - Destroyers (1/2)
   06 Jun 18 11:54:57

The Star Trek Wiki Memory Alpha Destroyers

This Star Trek Memory Alpha article or subsection has an associated
   category.

   Destroyers.
   Example: A Marshall-class destroyer.
A destroyer is a type of military starship intended to escort vessels in a
fleet and defend them from attack, giving this type of vessel similarities
with escort ships. Destroyers can be further classified as heavy destroyers.

Starfleet starship vessel classes that fill this role include the
   Marshall-class, Saladin-class, Akula-class, and Baker-class.

Destroyers starships were useful vessel types in areas where treaty agreements
forbade larger, more heavilty armed vessels from encroaching on neighboring
powers. (FASA RPG module: Demand of Honor)

Note: Following naval tradition, the difference in a destroyer and a destroyer
escort is denoted by the vessel's size, armament, and mission, with a
destroyer escort being the smaller of the two. Although no direct reference to
   these classifications are
made in Star Trek lore, it can be assumed that the same would hold true in the
   Federation and elsewhere.
According to The Making of Star Trek, Captain Kirk's first command was a
   Destroyer-class starship.
