Mulder watched as Scully filed away a report. Something was clearly on her
mind. "Wanna talk?" he asked, touching her arm.

"Nope. Nothing to talk about" Scully tried to smile as she pushed the drawer
closed. She sat down on her side of the room and stared down at the papers
in front of her, chewing on her pen. She tried not to look up at Mulder.

He let the silence between them increase until it was deafening. He shoved
his chair back. "Come on, it's quitting time. We're getting you out of here
and we're doing something that doesn't involve a case. Just you and me." He
   held out her suit jacket.

It was on the tip of her tongue to protest, but she found herself agreeing.
"What did you have in mind?"

"Haven't thought that part through. I just know I can't watch you fight your
inner demons...and we can't talk here." Mulder held open the door. "Right?"

Scully followed him to the elevators and then to the parkade.

"My car broke down on the way to work this morning...so I have a rental."
Mulder stopped at a silver Jeep wrangler. Scully wordlessly got into the
   passenger side.

"Any thoughts on where you want to go?"

"The park? I have a sudden urge to feed pigeons."

"Then feed pigeons it is." Mulder reached across and snapped on her
seatbelt. "Can't have you falling out...now can we?"

Scully closed her eyes as a shiver ran through her body. She automatically
   reprimanded herself.

   "Scully?"

   "Yeah?"

"I...uh...never mind." Mulder put the key in the ignition and pulled out to
the park. Scully mentally sighed as she unbuckled her seatbelt when Mulder
brought the car to a stop fifteen minutes later.

"We ah...we should get some bread."

Scully was already starting for the booth. She gave the vendor a dollar.

"Always one step ahead of me," Mulder muttered more to himself than to her.
He waited for her by the stone fountain. She gave him a bag of bread,
deliberately trying not to touch his hand. He put his outer on top of hers
and held her hand between his for a brief second.
   "You sure you're okay?"

"I'm fine, Mulder" Scully smiled. "I'm always fine when I'm out here. It's
   relaxing."

"If you need a break from the X-files..from me...I understand." Mulder
couldn't look at her. He was too afraid to see his own fears reflected in
   her eyes.

Slowly, Scully took his hand. "I couldn't do that to you. I just...I was
thinking about the whole hypnosis thing with you and Melissa."

   "What part?"

"How even then we were only friends." She didn't realize at first that
Mulder could see into her eyes.

   "Scully...we're not friends."

She tried not to cry as she stood up, intent on moving away from him. "I
   see..."

Mulder grabbed her arm. "We're so much more than friends. The tears managed
to fall down her cheek. He released her arm. "If it's not what you want, I
   understand."

"What if it is?" she whispered.

He swallowed hard. "You want this... me... us..."

"I don't want to scare you, but yes," she whispered again.

Scare me...are you kidding?" Mulder smiled slowly as he put his hand down
and into hers. "Scully, you could never scare me."

Her body relaxed slightly as she gave his hand a gentle squeeze. "Got any
more crumbs in there?" She looked in his bag.

Mulder handed her his nearly-full bag of bread crumbs. He'd been too busy
watching her feed pigeons. Scully smiled, taking his hand and put it in the
bag. She took his hand out and emptied the crumbs on the ground where the
   pigeons were still waiting.

It took all of his willpower not to take her in his arms and kiss her right
there. He needed to know that she was ready for that step. He kissed her
cheek softly as he pulled her in front of him and they finished feeding the
   pigeons together.

The kiss on the cheek made Scully tingle. She turned around, taking a
chance. She kissed his lips softly, pulling back and waiting to monitor his
   reaction.

Mulder closed his eyes and let a soft breath escape. "Dana..." he whispered.

   "It's okay," she whispered back.

"It's never just okay when it's you..." Mulder pulled her closer and wrapped
his jacket around her small frame. She rested her head against him.

"It's cold," he said into her hair.

"Maybe we should go," she suggested.

   "But you fit..."

"We'll continue this...just inside where it's warmer. And more private."

"Private...Scully...I'm not sure...oh god...I won't be able to keep my hands
off of you," Mulder said, holding her face in his hands.

"I thought that was the idea," Scully said with a small smile.

Mulder groaned and closed his eyes. "I don't want to rush this...us. I can't
   lose you."

"You're not rushing me, Mulder," she said softly. He cupped her chin.

"But if it makes you more comfortable, we'll go slow," Scully added.

"I'm ready." Mulder kissed her chin, then her mouth. Scully's eyes stayed
closed for a moment. "Let's go". Mulder took her hand and let her back to
   the jeep.

   "Your apartment or mine?"

   Mulder laughed. "Yours."

Scully blushed a little at how she had blurted the question.

"You look cute when you blush," Mulder said after he'd secured her inside
   the jeep.

Twenty five minutes later, Scully was looking up at her building. Mulder
brought the jeep to a stop and she undid her seatbelt again, fishing for her
   keys.

Mulder watched as her hands shook. "Hey...we can take this slow...I don't
expect to be in your bed the minute the door closes behind us."

Scully chided herself as she finally managed to put the key in the lock. She
also swallowed back a curious pang of disappointment..there was a part of
her that wanted to do exactly that.

Once inside, Mulder took off his jacket. "You've rearranged..."

"I got bored with the way my furniture was," Scully said as she took his
   jacket.

Mulder pulled her to him and pushed the jacket from her hands. "Just so long
as you don't get bored with me."

"Believe me, Mulder...that couldn't happen," Scully said softly as she
   gently touched his face.

"Dance with me." Scully rested her head against him as their feet began to
move. "We don't need music..." Mulder held her as he swayed with her.

Scully's eyes closed as Mulder's arms tightened around her.
He slowly took her hand and spun her out and back to him, only now her back
   was against his front.

   "You smell so good."

"Turn me around again?" Scully whispered. He did. "Want to see you."
   Scully's hand touched Mulder's face.

"Close your eyes." Mulder watched as her face registered confusion. "Do you
trust me?" Scully closed her eyes. Her heart pounded in her ears.

Mulder slowly took her hands and touched his face. "Memorize me..."

Scully's hands were beginning to tremble as she painstakingly ran her
fingers down his face. He slowly went to work on the buttons of his shirt.
