   3-11 Maternal Instincts

First air date was Jan 28, 1998.

The episode starts out with Xena and Gabrielle walking through a clearing with
   war totems covered
with flowers. Gabrielle comments on how much difference a year can make. Xena
   hears something.
Suddenly Solan jumps down from a tree to surprise her. Next Kaleipus shows up.
   He talks about a
treaty with (??), so all the delegates have brought their children. Gabrielle
   suggests to Solan
they race to the village edge so Xena and Kaleipus can talk. Xena says she
   isn't there to take
   Solan.

Cut to a little girl about ten years old bouncing a ball. It falls down into a
   chasm and disappears
into some rocks. The ball rests on the floor of a cave. Suddenly the floor
   splits and fire comes
out. The girl faints as Callisto flies up to the top of the chasm She sees the
   child and says she
   always wanted one.

In the village Gabrielle goes into a hut and sees Solan with Ephiny and her
   centaur son, Xenon.
Solan and Xenon leave. Ephiny sees that Gabrielle is upset.

Back to the totems, and Callisto is setting them on fire with fireballs from
   her hands. Two
   soldiers see her and attack.

Back to Gabrielle and Ephiny. Gabrielle, almost in tears, tells Ephiny that
   in Britannia she had
a child that died. Ephiny tells her not to blame herself, no one knows why the
   Fates steal a
   child's life.

Xena and Kaleipus find the dead soldiers. He thinks Ares killed them, but Xena
   suspects someone
else, but can't believe it's who she is thinking of.

Ephiny leaves for a meeting (of delegates?) leaving Gabrielle alone. Someone
   sneaks into the hut.
It is the little girl. She says her name is Fayla. She says she has a message
   only for Xena,
otherwise the monster-lady will kill her. They find Xena. Xena says she
   suspected Callisto, but
doesn't understand how she was freed. The message is that Callisto knows
   Xena's secret and will
take it to the grave. They decide to hide Solan in the Ixion caves. They want
   to take Fayla but she
   has disappeared.

In the caves Callisto is brushing Fayla/Hope's hair. Hope says she freed
   Callisto to help her snuff
   out the people Xena loves.

Solan doesn't want to hide away in the caves, but Xena tells him it's because
   Kaleipus loves him.

Gabrielle bumps into Hope in a store, and Hope drops the carving of the lamb
   Gabrielle put in the
basket when she set her adrift. Gabrielle knows it is Hope and tells her she
   has something she has
to do, but to wait in her hut.

Xena and a cloaked figure are running through the woods. Callisto finds them,
   thinking the cloaked
person is Solan. But it is Gabrielle. Callisto tells them is was a good plan,
   and she can't be two
places at once - or can she? Xena realizes someone is helping Callisto but
   doesn't know who.

Kaleipus is in the Ixion caves. Hope makes a sword fly though the air and stab
   him. He dies outside
where Xena and Gabrielle find him.

Xena tells Solan that Kaleipus is dead and Solan wants to leave with Xena
   rather than stay in the
village. Xena tells him to pack and when she's finished with Callisto they
   will leave together. And
they will have a lot to talk about on the road.

Back in the cave Callisto finds a weakened Hope. She starts to go after Solan
   but Hope tells her to
wait or she'll be destroyed by Dahak along with the rest of the gods. Callisto
   sits down next to
   her to wait.

Back in Gabrielle's hut, she is angry when Fayla finally gets there. But Fayla
   tells her Callisto
said she was evil because she can move things with her mind. Gabrielle tells
   her she IS NOT evil.
And she admits she is Hope's mother, and she loves her. Hope says Callisto
   will kill her, so
Gabrielle takes her to the safest place she knows - with Solan.

Gabrielle tells Xena about Callisto's plan to kill all the children, and that
   Fayla told her. Xena
says Callisto wouldn't have told her the plan and she can't be trusted.
   Gabrielle says Xena was
always quick to blame her but she's not evil. Xena realizes it's Hope and says
   poison will kill her
   if her powers aren't mature.

Xena runs to see about Solan but he is dead. Gabrielle follows, and can't
   believe he is dead. Xena
   tells her to get out.

In the caves, Callisto hears Xena's cries of anguish, and is momentarily
   elated.

Ephiny comes into the hut and tells Xena Callisto is coming and they need her
   help. Xena tells her
to go away. Xenon comes in and Xena leaves Solan to fight Callisto.

Hope goes back to Gabrielle's hut and says Solan was dead when she got there.
   At first Gabrielle
believes her until she says Solan's name.

Gabrielle gets poison and pours it into a water skin.

Callisto is walking through the deserted village. Xena shoots an arrow through
   her heart. Callisto
asks about Xena losing her family, and how it hurts. Xena shoots another
   arrow, then many archers
shoot Callisto until she had a dozen or more arrows in her. She revitalizes
   and causes the arrows
to fly out of her and some of them kill the archers.

Callisto goes into the caves where the women and children are hiding. Xena is
   there waiting for
her. They fight. Callisto throws lighting bolts from her fingers, causing the
   columns holding up
the ceiling to fall. At the last moment Xena escapes, trapping Callitso in the
   caves.

Cut to Gabrielle where she had given Hope the poisoned water. Hope is dead and
   Gabrielle starts to
drink but the water skin is almost empty and she pours the little bit left
   onto the ground. Xena
sees what has happened and she and Gabrielle exchange painful looks.

It is night and there are twin funeral pyres, one for Solan and one for Hope.
   Ephiny is singing a
   funeral dirge.

Gabrielle is in tears and admits she should have done what Xena told her. And
   because of that
Kaleipus and Solan are dead. Xena tells her not to speak his name. She trusted
   Gabrielle but she
lied to her, and now Xena's son is dead.

A tearful Gabrielle tells Xena she loves her then walks away.

Xena sheds a few more tears and walks away in the opposite direction.

   .......

And the roller coaster continues on! From the lofty heights of two humorous
   eps, then plunging
down to the very depths of betrayal and despair. What a ride!

There was no doubt that Hope would be back.

But I wonder how it was that Callisto showed up but not Velasca. You would
   think that Hope would
want all the help she could get. Maybe she only had enough power to free one
   of them and Callisto
seemed to be the best candidate.

Anyway, Callisto was back and just as deliciously evil as ever. Although it
   was odd to see her
