           Maybe it was a poor choice of words. Maybe what she meant to say was   
   "I never wanted to   
   have to lie to you. (But you left me no choice.)"   
           I think Gabrielle didn't want to take the chance Ephiny might say the   
   wrong thing at the   
   wrong time, to the wrong person, and decided it was just better not to tell   
   her what really DID   
   happen.
