Some very good points. How many times have we heard or read about a mother
   swearing her son (or
daughter) is innocent of a criminal charge when the facts / proof is staring
   them right in the
   face?
Despite what Gabrielle told Xena about the innocent Gabrielle no long
   existing after Callisto
killed Perdicus, she obviously still looks for the good, especially when it's
   her own child.
As far as 'the safest place' maybe Gabrielle was thinking that somehow
   Xena was going to be
close enough at hand to protect Solan, and Hope. Or that Callisto would never
   take the time look
into all of the huts looking for Hope.

I just realized there was a discontinuity --
Hope: "But I'm scared. If Callisto finds out I told, she'll kill me!
   She will!"
Gabrielle: "She will not find out. I will take you to the safest place
   there is, until we can
   go. OK?"
Hope: "The safest place? You promise?"
Gabrielle: "I cross my heart. Don't be afraid-- OK? Now, come with me.
   Let's go."

   But Gabrielle tells Xena --
Gabrielle: "You are wrong! Xena, Hope is the victim here! That is why I
   sent her to Kaleipus'
hut, so she would be safe from Callisto."
Xena: "You sent her to Kaleipus' hut?"

    Someone wasn't doing their job!!
