   3-21 Sacrifice, Part 1   
      
      
      
             First air date May 4, 1998.   
      
             The story starts out at an old abandoned temple. Then a vortex in   
   the sky appears with   
   lightning coming out of it. Then we see Callisto crawling out of the center   
   and dives down to the   
   ground. She says something about it not being built to hold a real god.   
      
             Then a cut to Gabrielle and Xena watching a ritual with four   
   scantily clad masked women   
   dancing around a fire. Surrounding them are men dressed in robes and hoods   
   over most of their   
   faces. Xena and Gabrielle are looking for a childhood friend of Gabrielle's.   
   Xena reads a priest's   
   lips and he says something about the return of a goddess and building temples   
   to her.   
      
             Gabrielle's friend, Seraphin, comes into view. She puts on a mask   
   with long straw hair   
   and climbs up a small ladder tower. The priest is about to stab her with a   
   spear when Xena uses her   
   Chakram to break the shaft. Everyone fights. Seraphin runs off with the   
   priest. Gabrielle beats up   
   a bunch of the followers while Xena chases Seraphin.   
      
             Xena runs into Callisto, who has cut another priest's throat then   
   disappears in a   
   fireball.   
      
             Gabrielle can't believe Seraphin is a follower of Callisto.   
      
             Cut to Callisto in a cave with the dead priest. She is about to cut   
   him up -- for   
   something we hear but don't see.   
      
             Xena sends Gabrielle ahead with Argo. Ares appears and wants to know   
   if Callisto had a   
   pendant with hind's blood on it. (Apparently Callisto killed Strife with it.)   
   Xena says no. Ares   
   wonders how Callisto got through the gate. Xena says she's a god, and how long   
   would it have taken   
   Ares?   
      
             Ares wants Xena's help stopping Callisto because she isn't a true   
   god. She was a mortal   
   first and has no respect for the other gods.   
      
             Back to the followers and the priest. They have Seraphin and once   
   again she climbs up the   
   ladder tower, but when the priest tries to stab her with another spear, it is   
   Xena. She fights   
   everyone.   
      
             Callisto appears. When she throws a fireball at Xena, she dives out   
   of the way. Ares is   
   behind Xena and gets hit with the fireball. He wants to fight Callisto, but   
   she grabs the priest   
   and disappears again.   
      
             Gabrielle asks Seraphin how she can worship Callisto, but she   
   doesn't know who she is.   
   Xena guesses it is Hope she worships.   
      
             Seraphin says Hope will bring peace to the world. Xena tells her   
   Hope killed Solan.   
   Gabrielle takes Seraphin away to try to talk to her.   
      
             Ares appears again and wants Xena to lead the massive army he   
   intends to bring together   
   to fight the followers of Hope. She refuses.   
      
             Xena tells Gabrielle that since Hope hasn't appeared yet, she may be   
   vulnerable enough to   
   kill.   
      
             Callisto takes the priest to the Cave of the Sister Peaks where Hope   
   is. The priest tells   
   her that his blood won't free Hope, only Seraphin's. But he can talk to Hope   
   for Callisto.   
      
             Ares tells one of his men to gather the troops. Then a bright orange   
   fiery light appears   
   behind Ares. He turns and we see fear on his face.   
      
             Gabrielle and Seraphin are sitting by a lake talking about their   
   childhood. Gabrielle is   
   trying to get her to tell her about the rebirth of Hope. She tells Gabrielle   
   that Hope's return is   
   for the greater good.  Gabrielle tells her that Hope is her daughter.   
      
             Callisto takes the priest into the cave where Hope is in a cocoon.   
   He talks to Hope and   
   discovers Callisto is helping Hope because she wants Hope to kill her. She   
   wants oblivion - no   
   Tartarus, no memories.   
      
             Xena tells Gabrielle she has to deal with Callisto before she can   
   take care of Hope.   
   Gabrielle tells Xena they are in the cave.   
      
             Xena goes to the cave and Callisto knows she is there. They fight   
   some. Xena cuts off   
   Callisto's hand but she grows a new one. Xena tries to get Callisto to use her   
   fireballs in the   
   cave but she knows it will take down the roof. Xena runs outside. Callisto   
   follows, but when she   
   uses a fireball, Xena reflects it off three shields and it hits the rocks over   
   the cave entrance   
   and buries Callisto.   
      
             Xena goes back into the cave, but when she starts to kill Hope, Ares   
   appears then   
   transports Hope away.   
      
             Seraphin tells Gabrielle that she is known as the Betrayer for   
   killing Hope. Gabrielle   
   says Hope is evil. Seraphin says Hope never had her mother to guide her as a   
   child. And how could   
   Gabrielle's child be evil?   
      
             Xena tells them that Ares has Hope but can't take her to Mt Olympus   
   because of the other   
   gods, and the only safe place is the Halls of War.   
      
             In the Halls, Ares tells Hope that even though she and Callisto   
   killed Strife and tried   
   to kill him, he forgives her. But Xena is coming and she needs to do something   
   to discourage her.   
      
             A mob of people start advancing on Xena, Gabrielle and Seraphin.   
   Xena sends them to a hut   
   and tries to fight off the mob. The people surround the hut. Xena comes down   
   through the ceiling,   
   boots Gabrielle up, knocks out Seraphin then jumps up to safety.   
      
             Xena, Gabrielle and Seraphin are searching for the Halls of War.   
   Gabrielle wonders if the   
   rebirth will change Hope. Xena tells her again Hope killed Solan and not to   
   defend her.   
      
    Xena leaves them. Seraphin tells Gabrielle Hope is her daughter and she loves   
   her. Gabrielle   
   releases Seraphin to go find Hope.   
      
   Xena comes up behind Gabrielle. It was a trick to get Seraphin to lead them to   
   Hope.   
      
   Ares tells the priest Xena is coming, the priest is worried. Ares says he has   
   a card to play that   
   Xena won't expect.   
      
   Xena goes into the Halls leaving Gabrielle behind. Ares grabs Gabrielle and   
   tells her they have   
   something to talk about.   
      
   He takes her to The Fates. He says she owes him a debt for talking her to Chin   
   ahead of Xena. And   
   if Xena kills Hope, the Fates will cut the thread of life. Gabrielle thinks   
   it's her thread, and   
   will sacrifice herself to stop Hope. But when Ares has her touch it, she   
   realizes it's Xena   
   life-thread. The Fates agree that Ares had the right to ask it.   
      
   Seraphin tells cocoon-Hope she is ready to die. The priest starts to stab her   
   but Xena's Chakram   
   breaks the blade. More fighting. Seraphin tries to kill herself with the   
   broken blade, but Xena   
   kicks it out of her hand. More fighting. The priest starts to stab Xena but   
   gets Seraphin instead.   
      
   Callisto appears.   
      
   Seraphin sees her blood on her hand and crawls to the cocoon and smears her   
   blood on it.
